Originally published in the Strand Magazine as a continous series, from August 1901 to April 1902, the plot is set in Dartmoor, Devon, in England's West Country but the beginning is set in London. It tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome hound.
As of 2006, there are at least 24 film adaptations of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Some remain very close to the text of the original book, while others are notable for differences in plot or execution.
